FUNMILAYO RANSOME KUTI: Biopic Hits Cinemas May 17

The film by Bolanle Austen-Peters stars; Joke Silva, Kehinde Bankole, and Adunni Ade.

The film was initially released for screening for a week between September 8 to September 14, 2023 at the Silverbird Cinemas on Victoria Island, Lagos. This limited run gained positive attention and commendations from the Anikulapo-Kuti family and so paved way for the wider release this May.

The film tells the tale of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti‘s mother; from her groundbreaking years as the first female pupil at Abeokuta Grammar School to her union with Israel Ransome-Kuti. Funmilayo and her husband opposed injustice and founded the Abeokuta Women’s Union. This led to conflicts with traditional and colonial rulers who stood in the way of justice and fairness.

With great performances from Joke Silva, Kehinde Bankole, Adunni Ade, Iyimide Ayo-Olumoko, Ibrahim Suleiman, and Iremide Adeoye, the film’s impact extends beyond the screen, having already earned two prestigious awards at the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) for Best Overall feature film and Best Screenplay.

Although biopics are relatively new to Nollywood, the industry has recently gained mass appeal for its far improved production of comedies, dramas, and thrillers; the impending broad release of “Funmilayo Ransome Kuti” has proven the growing interest in stories around the lives, times and exploits of significant Nigerians and heroes.
